THE CONCEPT OF A MOBILE MAPPING WORKSTATION IS DESCRIBED. THE WORKSTATION INTEGRATES A STEREO-VISION SYSTEM, A GPS-RECEIVER, AND AN INERTIAL SYSTEM, TO AUTOMATICALLY COLLECT DATA OF THE ENVIRONMENT OF ROADS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND STORE THIS INFORMATION IN A GIS. THE VISION SYSTEM ACQUIRES AND STORES DIGITAL IMAGE-PAIRS ONCE A SECOND. THREE DIMENSIONAL COORDINATES CAN BE COMPUTED BY INTERSECTION OF IMAGE POINTS AND RELATED TO A GLOBAL COORDINATE SYSTEM BY MEANS OF THE GPS ANTENNA. THE ANALYTICAL CALIBRATION OF ALL SENSORS OF THE WORKSTATION, THE AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF THE EDGES OF THE ROAD, AND A SEQUENTIAL TRIANGULATION OF STEREO-PAIRS IS DISCUSSED.
