A TASK-LEVEL ROBOTIC PLANNING SYSTEM IS PRESENTED. THE SYSTEM ALLOWS THE USER TO SPECIFY THE ROBOT TASKS IN A NATURAL LANGUAGE FORMAT. THE INPUT COMMANDS ARE INTERPRETED AND A GRAPHICAL DISPLAY OF THE PROGRAMMED TASKS IS PROVIDED. THE SYSTEM ALLOWS PROGRAM EDITING AND PROVIDES UTILITIES FOR STEP-BY-STEP VERIFICATION OF THE PROGRAMMED TASKS. SINCE THE PROGRAMMING IS DONE AT A TASK LEVEL, THE SYSTEM IS ROBOT INDEPENDENT. THE SYSTEM OUTPUT IS POST-PROCESSED TO GENERATE THE ACTUAL CODE REQUIRED BY A SPECIFIC ROBOT CONTROLLER. THE APPLICATION OF THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED ON AN IBM 7547 ROBOT.
