PRODUCTION ENGINEERING'S MOST EFFECTIVE APPROACH TO ASSEMBLY PROCESS PLANNING IS A SYSTEM APPROACH. ASSEMBLY SYSTEMS ARE OFTEN PLANNED BY MERE INTUITION. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES A PLANNING STRATEGY WHICH PROVIDES A METHODOLOGY TO DESIGN AND EVALUATE AUTOMATED ASSEMBLY SYSTEMS AND WHICH USES COMPUTER TOOLS FOR EACH STEP IN THE PLANNING PROCEDURE. SOME PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENTS WILL BE PRESENTED, E.G. CARO, A THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN AND PROGRAMMING SYSTEM FOR ASSEMBLY CELLS. PLANNING PROGRAMMABLE ASSEMBLY SYSTEMS MUST FIT INTO THE FACTORY ACTIVITIES AS A WHOLE. THERE IS A VARIETY OF INPUT INFORMATION TO THE PLANNING PROCEDURE WHICH HAS TO BE PROCESSED, AND THERE IS ALSO OUTPUT DATA WHICH DESCRIBES THE PLANNING RESULTS.
