THE FIELD OF ROBOTICS IS EXPANDING, AND ROBOTS ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM MANY COMPLEX TASKS IN OUTER SPACE, UNDER WATER, AND UNDER GROUND. IN GENERAL, INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS HAVE NOT BEEN DESIGNED FOR INSPECTION, AND MAINTENANCE IN NONSTRUCTURED ENVIRONMENTS SUCH AS NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, AIRCRAFT, SHIP, BRIDGES, AND PAINTING OF TALL BUILDINGS. THERE ARE NEW INITIATIVES FOR CLIMBING ROBOTS. IN THIS PAPER, VARIOUS TYPES OF INSPECTION ROBOTS ARE CONSIDERED FOR USE IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS AND ESPECIALLY FOR INSPECTING AIRCRAFT. THE EMPHASIS IS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE WALL-CLIMBING ROBOT FOR AIRCRAFT INSPECTION CALLED ROSTAM.
