A LARGE SMC MOLDER REGULARLY HANDLING 50 TO 100 THOUSAND POUND MOLDS IN PRESSES UP TO 4000 TONS IS FEATURED IN THIS TECHNICAL PAPER. IN JULY 1990 A MANAGEMENT DRIVEN QMC PROGRAM WAS INITIATED TO SATISFY THE AUTOMOTIVE JIT PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS. A PILOT CELL FOR IMPROVEMENT WAS ESTABLISHED IN THREE 1000-TON PRESSES. THE INITIAL REVIEW INDICATED CHANGES REQUIRED SIX TO EIGHT HOURS AND A TRAINING PROGRAM IN THE SINGLE MINUTE EXCHANGE OF DIES (SMED) WAS UNDERTAKEN. QMC TEAMS WERE FORMED ON EACH OF THE THREE SHIFTS PLUS ONE FROM TOP MANAGEMENT. IN FEBRUARY 1991, EACH SHIFT CHANGED A MOLD IN 100 TON PRESS IN 40 TO 120 MINUTES.
