MOST COMPANIES WHO HAVE IMPLEMENTED MECHANICAL CAD (MCAD) HAVE REALIZED PRODUCTIVITY INCREASES IN DISCRETE AREAS OF THEIR DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES, OR DEPARTMENTS--IN PARTICULAR, BY AUTOMATING DRAFTING AND NC PROGRAMMING. IN MANY CASES, HIGHER LEVELS OF PRODUCTIVITY HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED BY LEVERAGING THE EXISTING MCAD SYSTEM INVESTMENT FURTHER, OR BY SELECTING AND IMPLEMENTING A NEW ONE WHICH BETTER MEETS THE NEEDS OF THE CORPORATION. IN EITHER CASE, AN EVALUATION PROCESS MUST BE UNDERTAKEN TO RESEARCH THE MARKET AND TECHNOLOGY, ASSESS THE CORPORATE NEEDS, EVALUATE MCAD SYSTEM(S) AGAINST REQUIREMENTS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION, AND TO SELECT AN APPROPRIATE SYSTEM. THIS PAPER ADDRESSES THE CORPORATE MCAD SELECTION PROCESS.
