TWO-THIRDS OF THE TYPICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT'S TIME IS SPENT ON NON-VALUE-ADDED ACTIVITIES ATTEMPTING TO COMMUNICATE DESIGN ISSUES ACROSS FUNCTIONAL BOUNDARIES. IN THE DAYS TO COME, THIS PATTERN WILL CHANGE FOR THE LEADERS. THE 1990 MANUFACTURING FUTURES SURVEY CONDUCTED BY BOSTON UNIVERSITY INDICATES THE TWO MOST SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT DEMANDED OF OUR MANUFACTURING ORGANIZATOINS ARE IMPROVED SPEED OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCT COST REDUCTION. CONCURRENT ENGINEERING ADDRESSES BOTH OF THESE AREAS. HOWEVER, MUCH OF THE ACTIVITY IN IMPLEMENTING CONCURRENT ENGINEERING HAS FAILED TO ADDRESS THE NEED TO CHANGE THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF SYSTEMS SUPPORTING PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT. TO ADDRESS THIS NEED, ANDERSEN CONSULTING HAS BUILT THE ACES DEMONSTRATION.
