AN AUTOMATED VISION ALIGNMENT PROCESS FOR APPLYING SOLDER PASTE TO A PCB IS DESCRIBED. MACHINE VISION IS USED TO ALIGN A STENCIL WITH A CIRCUIT BOARD. THE VISION SYSTEM IS SET UP TO RECOGNIZE FIDUCIALS, TYPICALLY PADS THEMSELVES, AND CREATES OUTPUTS TO DRIVE THREE STEPPER MOTORS TO ALIGN THE BOARD WITH THE STENCIL. THE MACHINE VISION UNITS ARE OF THE INTEGRATED TYPE. THE ILLUMINATION, OPTICS, CCD LIGHT SENSITIVE ARRAY, MICRO-COMPUTER, COMMUNICATIONS, AND STEPPER MOTOR DRIVERS ARE ALL INCORPORATED INTO A SINGLE DEVICE.
