THE CURRENT TREND IN MACHINE TOOLS IS TOWARD FASTER, MORE ACCURATE MACHINES. TO INCREASE ACCURACY, ERRORS INDUCED BY LEAD-SCREW NON-UNIFORMITY, PITCH OR YAW MOTION, AND ENCODER ERROR MUST BE MINIMIZED. TO INCREASE THE SPEED, IT IS IMPORTANT TO USE A FASTER AND TIGHTER MOTION CONTROL SERVO, LASER FEEDBACK, LINEAR MOTORS, AND RIGID MACHINE STRUCTURE. DESCRIBED HERE IS A NEW CONCEPT OF MACHINE TOOL DESIGN THAT UTILIZES A NEW LASER ENCODER BASED ON THE LASER DOPPLER DISPLACEMENT METER (LDDM) TECHNOLOGY. USING THIS LDDM LASER ENCODER, BOTH HIGH SPEED AND HIGH ACCURACY HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED.
