The aim of this paper is to report research into a real-time intelligent shop floor control framework for on-line scheduling and control of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) considering the stochastic nature of an automated production system. The proposed intelligent cell control architecture consists of a Dynamic Data Base (DDB), Input Analyzer/Preprocessor (IA/P), Neural Network Inference Engine (NNIE), and off-line Simulation and Neural Network Training Module (SNNTM), and Data Communication Modules. Such a shop floor control scheme provides an integrated environment with innovative cell control concepts enabling not only feasible control actions to be taken but also continuously improved control decisions be implemented as the cell operation time goes by.
