Laser machining is being increasingly used as a technique for efficient manufacturing of high quality products. In order to achieve products with a reproducible high quality standard, a process control system used for high power Nd:YAG and CO (sub2)-laser welding has been developed. This system measures the process radiation and correlates it with seam quality parameters such as the penetration depth. Different analysis algorithms, depending on the seam structure, are used for the recognition of seam failures. Additionally, high power lasers are sensitive, and often require maintenance work. To avoid unplanned failures a condition monitoring system is necessary. Such a system, developed at the LZH, observes the behavior of the critical components in order to predict their actual aging process.
