Many studies have shown that the choice of dispatching rule and the choice of due-date assignment rule for dynamic job shops have significant interaction effects on performance and the decisions should be considered collectively. However, most due-date assignment rules are designed to be applied on all production systems regardless of which dispatching rule is used to sequence jobs. This simulation study of a dynamic job shop demonstrates methods of developing due-date assignment rules under various dispatching rules that have achieved statistically significant improvement over the other existing due-date rules in most of the performance measures used.
