This paper proposes an innovative vacuum-hydrostatic shoe for centerless grinding. The shoe combines a vacuum with a hydrostatic bearing to provide a non-contact workpiece support. A design methodology is developed and performance characterization is conducted. The load carrying capacity and stiffness of the shoe are simulated and verified by experiments. It is shown that the shoe can be designed with a large load capacity and stiffness as well as good damping capability. The results of the study indicate the feasibility of the vacuum-hydrostatic shoe to suppress lobing and chatter, eliminate shoe wear and workpiece burn problems in shoe centerless grinding.
