Ultrasonics is a widely used nondestructive testing technique. Traditional ultrasonic techniques use contact devices (piezoelectric transducers) for generation and reception of sound pulses. Laser-based ultrasound systems are non-contacting, making them suitable for testing moving specimens or for operation in hazardous environments. This paper introduces a fiber tool as a robust device for laser-based ultrasound systems which will enable generation of ultrasound in industrial settings. The fiber tool is shown to generate both thermoelastically and by ablation by observation and measurement of the spot profile and depiction of the longitudinal directivity patterns.
