This paper describes the enhancement of a system that directly measures the internal diameter of a part during a bore grinding operation. The measurement system consists of two diamond tipped probes attached to linear variable differential transformers and placed between the grinding wheel and the inside diameter of the work piece. The motion of the grinding machine spindle is simulated using a lathe that provides work piece rotation and convenient positioning of the measurement system. A number of cylindrical work pieces are measured to evaluate the ability of the enhanced measurement system to detect deviations from a target diameter, out-of-roundness, and surface profile waviness.
