The quantification of manufacturing complexity for a certain process is an important issue for cost estimation and manufacturability evaluation. Manufacturing complexity in die-casting depends mainly on the geometry and tolerance requirements. In this paper, we show how to quantify manufacturing complexity manually for die-cast components. The same procedure can be applied to all net-shape-manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, and forging. In this paper, the quantification of die-cast complexity is based upon a survey carried out by the authors to collect the effects of different features on both tooling and processing complexities. Features such as ribs, undercuts, die-configuration, tolerances, and surface finish are included among the survey questionnaire.
