We present a scheme for planning the scanning process of a given freeform surface by laser stripe. The planning process considers the surface geometry as well as the optical constraints of the laser stripe scanner. The suggested approach is based on decomposition of the scanning task into three steps: First, those regions on the surface that can be scanned from similar viewing locations (position and orientation) are found. Second, within each region an optimal set of scanner locations is found, which guarantees coverage of the entire region. Finally, these sets are ordered to form a minimal length scanning path that covers the entire surface.
