Recent advances in PC technology have made available to machine vision users new tools with the potential of lowering the cost of automation projects, while making them more robust and easier to configure to process changes. The trend today is to work with open architecture hardware and software, such as PCI bus-based frame grabbers, the NT operating system and Visual Basic. This paper presents a review of new machine vision systems that fulfills these requirements while offering simpler user interfaces and novel capabilities. The end result is that industrial vision applications can now be developed faster than ever before, while being inherently more tolerant of environmental conditions. The benefits of this new generation of vision technology are also presented and discussed.
