Designed experimentation can be used for problem solving, process improvement, or understanding the underlying mechanisms of a process. Unfortunately, designed experimentation is not being used as often as it could, or should, be used. The reasons for this include potential experimenters' lack of knowledge of designed experimentation, their fear that design experimentation is too difficult or too technical, and their occasional overconfidence in their abilities. This paper is a nontechnical presentation, for the layman or beginning experimenter, on what designed experimentation is, why it should be used, the reasoning behind the practice, the steps involved in performing an experiment, and many of the options available during each step.
