The use of robots in welding applications is increasing. In 1995, approximately 1600 arc welding robots were sold in the USA where most of these robots primarily use the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process, also referred to as MIG welding, followed by flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. These processes are used because they have simple welding torches, good disposition rates, and tolerance to part fit-up. Robotic welding offers many advantages such as repeatability, higher productivity, and better quality.
