This standard describes procedures to measure thethickness of dry, homogeneous coatings applied on a variety ofsurfaces such as concrete, wood, wallboard, plastic, fiber andcomposite material using commercially available ultrasoniccoating thickness gages. These procedures are intendedto supplement manufacturers' operating instructions for themanual operation of the gages and are not intended to replacethem.
The procedures for calibration, adjustment, andgeneral use of ultrasonic coating thickness gages aredescribed in ASTM D6132 and the gage manufacturer'sinstructions. This document focuses on the correct method fortaking measurements.
Current ultrasound technology may not be capable ofaccurately measuring the DFT of some coatings (see Notes9.1 and 9.2).
