Maleic acid is a chemical that is used in the manufacture of artificial resins, surface coatings, lubricant additives, plasticizers, copolymers, and agricultural chemicals. It is used in the organic synthesis of malic, succinic, aspartic, tartaric, propionic, lactic, malonic, acrylic, and hydroacrylic acids. It is used to retard the rancidity of fats and oils, as well as, in the dyeing and finishing of wool, cotton, and silk. It is also used as a chemical intermediate for comonomers in adhesives, fumaric acid, resins, and synthetic oils.
